Talon is a young Kriite man who works as the quartermaster's apprentice of a small village. Although he wishes he became a warrior, like his parents, his skills lie more with the harvesters guild and his trade. When he finally meets and bonds with an icetiger, he becomes a shapechanger and a psion with access to the telepathic powers of his people.
Age-old enemies of his people, the Zeikas are aware of his burgeoning abilities and come after him, wanting to twist it for their own purposes. Feeling ill-equipped to face the threat, Talon is sent on a pilgrimmage to Tanza with Sarlice, a warrior from the tribe of Lyth. Formiddable Sarlice has spent her entire life fleeing from or fighting Zeikas and is bonded with a firetiger and a warbow.

Talon and Sarlice are welcomed into Tanza, where they bond with skyearls of their own. Talon joins with Ciera, emperor of the skyearls, who is a magnificent, feathered dragon as tall as some of the karst towers in the breathtaking landscape. Hoping to get help for their tribes, Talon and Sarlice travel to Centan to meet the king and queen. Tanza is attacked by Reltland, drawing Talon and Sarlice into a far bigger fight than they expected.
